PowerShot G |
These models feature a fixed lens with good brightness. They have primarily an optical viewfinder, sometimes followed by a digital viewfinder, either integrated or as an accessory. Apart from the extravagance of the PowerShot G3 X, the focal lengths remain reasonable. For the earlier models, optional optical accessories were available, allowing users to access shorter or longer focal lengths as needed.

__________
The existence of the G5 was justified only by Canon's need to catch up with competitors who were then using a 5 MP sensor; otherwise, it is identical to the G3 (there was no G4!). The sensor was manufactured by Sony. The G5 also benefited from improved software. The zoom remained the same, and there was no reason to change it, given its well-recognized qualities. Perhaps a shorter starting focal length would have been welcome.
The Powershot G5 existed in two versions (with different prices). The "consumer" version was bronze, and the so-called Pro version was black, sold with a 1 GB Microdrive. Optional accessories were available: focal length converter, flashes, macro flash, and close-up lens.
